1. Jesus is Condemned

Matthew 27:11-31

11
Now Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor questioned Him, saying, "Are You the King of the Jews?'' And Jesus said to him, "It is as you say.''
12
And while He was being accused by the chief priests and elders, He did not answer.
13
Then Pilate said to Him, "Do You not hear how many things they testify against You?''
14
And He did not answer him with regard to even a single charge, so the governor was quite amazed.
15
Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to release for the people any one prisoner whom they wanted.
16
At that time they were holding a notorious prisoner, called Barabbas.
17
So when the people gathered together, Pilate said to them, "Whom do you want me to release for you? Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?''
18
For he knew that because of envy they had handed Him over.
19
While he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent him a message, saying, "Have nothing to do with that righteous Man; for last night I suffered greatly in a dream because of Him.''
20
But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to put Jesus to death.
21
But the governor said to them, "Which of the two do you want me to release for you?'' And they said, "Barabbas.''
22
Pilate said to them, "Then what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?'' They all said, " Crucify Him!''
23
And he said, "Why, what evil has He done?'' But they kept shouting all the more, saying, " Crucify Him!''
24
When Pilate saw that he was accomplishing nothing, but rather that a riot was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd, saying, "I am innocent of this Man's blood; see to that yourselves.''
25
And all the people said, " His blood shall be on us and on our children!''
26
Then he released Barabbas for them; but after having Jesus scourged, he handed Him over to be crucified.
27
Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole Roman [cohort around Him.
28
They stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him.
29
And after twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand; and they knelt down before Him and mocked Him, saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!''
30
They spat on Him, and took the reed and began to beat Him on the head.
31
After they had mocked Him, they took the scarlet robe off Him and put His own garments back on Him, and led Him away to crucify Him.

Mark 15:2-15

2
Pilate questioned Him, "Are You the King of the Jews?'' And He answered him, "It is as you say.''
3
The chief priests began to accuse Him harshly.
4
Then Pilate questioned Him again, saying, "Do You not answer? See how many charges they bring against You!''
5
But Jesus made no further answer; so Pilate was amazed.
6
Now at the feast he used to release for them any one prisoner whom they requested.
7
The man named Barabbas had been imprisoned with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the insurrection.
8
The crowd went up and began asking him to do as he had been accustomed to do for them.
9
Pilate answered them, saying, ""Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?''
10
For he was aware that the chief priests had handed Him over because of envy.
11
But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to ask him to release Barabbas for them instead.
12
Answering again, Pilate said to them, "Then what shall I do with Him whom you call the King of the Jews?''
13
They shouted] back, "Crucify Him!''
14
But Pilate said to them, "Why, what evil has He done?'' But they shouted all the more, "Crucify Him!''
15
Wishing to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas for them, and after having Jesus scourged, he handed Him over to be crucified.

Luke 23:2-25

2
And they began to accuse Him, saying, "We found this man misleading our nation and forbidding to pay taxes to Caesar, and saying that He Himself is Christ, a King.''
3
So Pilate asked Him, saying, "Are You the King of the Jews?'' And He answered him and said, "It is as you say.''
4
Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, "I find no guilt in this man.''
5
But they kept on insisting, saying, "He stirs up the people, teaching all over Judea, starting from Galilee even as far as this place.''
6
When Pilate heard it, he asked whether the man was a Galilean.
7
And when he learned that He belonged to Herod's jurisdiction, he sent Him to Herod, who himself also was in Jerusalem at that time.
8
Now Herod was very glad when he saw Jesus; for he had wanted to see Him for a long time, because he had been hearing about Him and was hoping to see some] sign performed by Him.
9
And he questioned Him at some length; but He answered him nothing.
10
And the chief priests and the scribes were standing there, accusing Him vehemently.
11
And Herod with his soldiers, after treating Him with contempt and mocking Him, dressed Him in a gorgeous robe and sent Him back to Pilate.
12
Now Herod and Pilate became friends with one another that very day; for before they had been enemies with each other.
13
Pilate summoned the chief priests and the rulers and the people,
14
and said to them, ""You brought this man to me as one who incites the people to rebellion, and behold, having examined Him before you, I have found no guilt in this man regarding the charges which you make against Him.
15
""No, nor has Herod, for he sent Him back to us; and behold, nothing deserving death has been done by Him.
16
""Therefore I will punish Him and release Him.''
17
[ Now he was obliged to release to them at the feast one prisoner.]
18
But they cried out all together, saying, " Away with this man, and release for us Barabbas!''
19
(He was one who had been thrown into prison for an insurrection made in the city, and for murder.)
20
Pilate, wanting to release Jesus, addressed them again,
21
but they kept on calling out, saying, ""Crucify, crucify Him!''
22
And he said to them the third time, ""Why, what evil has this man done? I have found in Him no guilt demanding death; therefore I will punish Him and release Him.''
23
But they were insistent, with loud voices asking that He be crucified. And their voices began to prevail.
24
And Pilate pronounced sentence that their demand be granted.
25
And he released the man they were asking for who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, but he delivered Jesus to their will.

John 18:33-40

33
Therefore Pilate entered again into the Praetorium, and summoned Jesus and said to Him, " Are You the King of the Jews?''
34
Jesus answered, ""Are you saying this on your own initiative, or did others tell you about Me?''
35
Pilate answered, ""I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests delivered You to me; what have You done?''
36
Jesus answered, " My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, then My servants would be fighting so that I would not be handed over to the Jews; but as it is, My kingdom is not of this realm.''
37
Therefore Pilate said to Him, ""So You are a king?'' Jesus answered, " You say correctly that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.''
38
Pilate said to Him, ""What is truth?'' And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews and said to them, " I find no guilt in Him.
39
" But you have a custom that I release someone for you at the Passover; do you wish then that I release for you the King of the Jews?''
40
So they cried out again, saying, " Not this Man, but Barabbas.'' Now Barabbas was a robber.

John 19

1
Pilate then took Jesus and scourged Him.
2
And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on His head, and put a purple robe on Him;
3
and they began to come up to Him and say, " Hail, King of the Jews!'' and to give Him slaps in the face.
4
Pilate came out again and said to them, ""Behold, I am bringing Him out to you so that you may know that I find no guilt in Him.''
5
Jesus then came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, ""Behold, the Man!''
6
So when the chief priests and the officers saw Him, they cried out saying, ""Crucify, crucify!'' Pilate said to them, ""Take Him yourselves and crucify Him, for I find no guilt in Him.''
7
The Jews answered him, " We have a law, and by that law He ought to die because He made Himself out to be the Son of God.''
8
Therefore when Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid;
9
and he entered into the Praetorium again and said to Jesus, ""Where are You from?'' But Jesus gave him no answer.
10
So Pilate said to Him, ""You do not speak to me? Do You not know that I have authority to release You, and I have authority to crucify You?''
11
Jesus answered, " You would have no authority] over Me, unless it had been given you from above; for this reason he who delivered Me to you has the greater sin.''
12
As a result of this Pilate made efforts to release Him, but the Jews cried out saying, " If you release this Man, you are no friend of Caesar; everyone who makes himself out to be a king opposes Caesar.''
13
Therefore when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out, and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called The Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha.
14 Now it was the day of preparation for the Passover; it was about the [sixth hour. And he said to the Jews, ""Behold, your King!''
15
So they cried out, " Away with Him, away with Him, crucify Him!'' Pilate said to them, ""Shall I crucify your King?'' The chief priests answered, ""We have no king but Caesar.''
16
So he then handed Him over to them to be crucified.

So they said to one another, " Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, to decide whose it shall be''; this was to fulfill the Scripture:, ""THEY DIVIDED MY OUTER GARMENTS AMONG THEM, AND FOR MY CLOTHING THEY CAST LOTS.''

Then the Jews, because it was the day of preparation, so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath for that Sabbath was a (high day), asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.
32
So the soldiers came, and broke the legs of the first man and of the other who was crucified with Him;
33
but coming to Jesus, when they saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs.
34
But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out.
35
And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you also may believe.
36
For these things came to pass to fulfill the Scripture, "NOT A BONE OF HIM SHALL BE BROKEN.''
