October 27.2013 Reflection

In a culture that values independence and self-
sufficiency, it can be hard to keep in mind our utter depend-
ence on God’s grace in our lives. God gives us life, and in-
vites us to live it to the fullest by loving and serving those
around us. All life is a response to God’s grace, a humble
acceptance of the greater reality that God has revealed
to us through Jesus Christ. When we brag like the Pharisee does
in today’s parable, we fool ourselves about the nature of our
relationship with God. The tax collector, more conscious of
his shortcomings and limitations than the Pharisee, also has
a better sense of the truth: that we are utterly reliant on
God’s help to get us through, because we are too limited to
do it on our own.
